Unfortunately these kind of stories are exceptions. We all like hearing them, I love hearing them, I love telling them, you love telling them. Maybe most importantly, he got a haircut. This is Greg on the About page of the agency that he works at, Bluecadet, which is an amazing agency in Philly. Afterward he proposed to his girlfriend, they got married on the beach shortly after that, they bought a house and an awesome dog named Zaida. The apprenticeship meant the world to me. From having nothing going for me and then becoming successful within less than a year’s time was unbelievable. And that was one of the big objectives throughout the apprenticeship. I remember Dan saying I’m going to teach you design but you can also apply it to life. It wasn’t how everybody else should learn. It was a really good process for me because it was how I wanted to learn. One thing you’re going to learn is different techniques and approaches to design. Big to small to really intricate to very simple things. The projects that SuperFriendly takes on it’s very diverse. Whether it was like cliche apprenticeship going out to get coffee or doing small things, but I was actually surprised when Dan really put me in front of the computer and said, OK, we’re going to learn. Starting out the apprenticeship I was nervous, I didn’t exactly know what I’ll be doing. And so I finally came to SuperFriendly to join the apprenticeship. From building houses, masonry, carpentry, to fast food restaurants, and everything was just not challenging. I’ve had jobs in every single field I can think of.

And Greg, having worked a bunch of different jobs over summers, he worked as a contractor one summer, he said I’ll make you a deal. We bought an old church but it needed a lot of work. When my wife and I moved back to Philly when we had our first kid, our first daughter, we moved into like a fixer upper. Greg’s my brother-in-law, my wife’s brother. Read more about the craft of web development here. This is Greg. It’s all related to the fact that what we do as developers and designers is in reality a craft, and we as a team need to see how our fellow craftspeople are going to handle their craft before knowing that they fit well within our workflow.

The question of whether we could do a trial period came up, so somewhere in the back of our minds we knew that the standard hiring system just doesn’t work very well with people for our industry. Recently we’ve gone through some interviews for new developers, and have run across the old issue of: you never really know whom you’re going to get after the hiring is done. And it’s something that I as a developer would love to see as the norm for employment within our industry. This may be one of the smartest ways to hire applicants for small web shops in the future. An apprenticeship should be a period of coaching, learning and growth for the apprentice all in the hopes of “raising” a developer who will add value to the entire team, not just the developers they’ll be working beside.Īn apprenticeship should grow the techniques and skills the person has in order to create a person who is capable of functioning at the same level as the other team members. Consider apprenticeships in a way, shortcuts to knowledge and wisdom. An apprentice is a person who is training under experienced professionals in order to learn and apply the skills they’ve initially learned either through schooling or on their own. These differ from standard internships in the idea that there is more value and training with an apprentice than on an unpaid intern. The idea of running Apprenticeships instead of Internships was discussed in a session given by Sparkbox who have recently run a couple of apprenticeships.
